Marsha Lane: The Cookie Song

Now is the time of year for scurrying around, shopping, decorating and … baking cookies!

A few years ago, one of my Pre-K teachers prepared a wonderful “cookie” unit with her students.   The students work on counting and sequencing, sorting and sharing.  Math and science objectives were addressed while they mixed and measured.  They learned all about solids and liquids and changing form.  The students learned new words and increased their vocabulary, all while exploring holiday traditions and cultural celebrations.  Here’s a little song I wrote that became the “song of the month” for that class and their cookie theme.  Perhaps you can think of some fun and entertaining activities to do with your child during this busy time of the year.  And of course, don’t forget to sing a few rousing verses of “The Cookie Song”.  Chocolate chip, anyone?

Enjoy and Happy Holidays!

I - V progression in "cookie" refrain
IV - I - V - I progression in "I'd eat" sections

Cookies, Cookies,

I just can’t wait to put them on my_ plate

Cookies, Cookies,

What kind shall I bake?

I’d eat them in the morning; I’d eat them at lunch

I’d eat them after school ‘cause I love them a bunch

I’d eat them in the evening, but my mother said,

(spoken) “You have to eat your vegetables, now go to bed!”

Cookies, Cookies,

I just can’t wait to put them on my_ plate

Cookies, Cookies

What kind shall I bake?

(Chant)  Chocolate Chip … mmmm

Peanut Butter … mmmm

Gingersnap … mmmm

… Sugar … YUM!

I’d eat them in the morning; I’d eat them at lunch

I’d eat them after school ‘cause I love them a bunch

I’d eat them in the evening, but my mother said,

(spoken) “You have to eat your vegetables, now go to bed!”

Cookies, cookies,

I just can’t wait to put them on my plate

Cookies, cookies

What kind shall I bake?

(Chant) M & M … mmmm

Oatmeal Raisin … mmmm

Lemon cream … mmmm

… Chocolate … YUM!

I’d eat them in the morning, I’d eat them … etc.

Cookies, cookies,

I just can’t wait … etc.

(chant) Put it in the bowl and stir it up!

Bake ‘til done and eat ‘em up!!
