Rachel Coon-Arnott: A Healthy Life
A Healthy Life
Many of our high school and middle school programs focus their training on functional skills that students will use in the workplace and daily living aspects of their lives. One of these areas of daily living is the development of healthy habits.
Music can help support the development of these healthy habits through the use of music as a tool for recall. I have written a song which focuses on the five habits necessary to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The simple chorus of the song provides a fun and easy way for students to remember these habits, and the song writing aspect of each verse provides an opportunity for them to creatively apply these habits to their lives.
Listen to the attached sound clip to hear the chorus and the accompanying verses that can be used for song writing. The lyrics are as follows:
Chorus:
Eat healthy foods, not candy or sweets
Exercise and get lots of sleep
Practice good hygiene, drink plenty of water
That’s what you need ...
To live a healthy life!
Verse:
Help me please I don’t know what to do
Can you give me a tip or two
(Students provide a practical application of one of the healthy habits suggested in the song)
That’s what you need ...
To live a healthy life!
Adaptations to this activity can be made by providing picture choices for students requiring extra support to suggest a practical tip in the creation of the verses of the song.
