Roy Joyner: Bust A Mood
This is an intervention I use to help students perceive emotions from facial cues. Sometimes they have to learn how to read faces and watch for key features such as the eyes or mouth. This can help them to understand when a person is happy, bored, angry or silly and so on. Often times I use this in conjunction with an app called “Emotions” by Innovative Mobile Apps. It shows four faces and an emotional word in the center. The student can then choose the face they think matches the emotion. As an extension we use a mirror or a mirror app to practice these faces ourselves. The rap is written to an instrumental track of “Bust a Move.”
Materials: Ipad with “Emotion” app, Speakers and MP3 player Procedure: 1. Demonstrate how to use the app beforehand. 2. You can perform the first verse while showing another example. 3. There are some spaces in the track that allow for turn taking on the app. 4. Listen or perform the rest of the rap making sure to give students or clients an opportunity to match the face with emotion.

Let me talk to you
About different places The way you feel Written on your faces Many emotions With many views How do we feel? Use facial cues Look at the mouth Check the eyes Take a guess How they feel inside. The face will show No matter what they choose Don’t just stand there Bust a mood When you’re crying Eyes are wet It’s a good bet I know you’re upset Or when you’re tired A little weepy Mouth is yawning I know you’re sleepy There are 4 faces On the screen If you get it right The check is green Your face will show No matter what you choose Don’t just stand there Bust a mood What can you do? You try to control it You have these feelings Now we all know it You might be happy You might be sad If your face is red You might be mad. Your face will show No matter what you choose Don’t just stand there Bust a mood |
